Cheryl Thomas

Cheryl Thomas discovered her passion for basket weaving in June 1993 when she attended a class at Fayetteville Technical Community College. From the moment she completed her first basket, she was hooked, creating another one before the night was over.

What started as a hobby soon evolved into a lifelong journey, leading her to active involvement in the Cape Fear Basketmakers Guild, where she held various leadership roles and helped organize statewide weaving events.

Over the years, Cheryl expanded her craft through teaching, becoming an integral part of the basket-weaving community. In 2021, she began instructing classes at Fayetteville Technical Community College. She quickly earned invitations to teach at prestigious events such as the Country Weavers’ annual weave-in and Port City Basketmakers’ gatherings. Today, she is a highly sought-after instructor, teaching across multiple states at conventions and guild events in North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, West Virginia, and Tennessee.

In addition to teaching, Cheryl showcases her work at Crafters’ Markets and art shows, where she loves engaging with curious visitors, answering their questions, and demonstrating the weaving process. Among her most celebrated designs is the Vertigo Basket, an intricate and visually striking piece that has gained widespread admiration. This signature basket, woven on a specially carved base, is a testament to Cheryl's skill and creativity. The Vertigo Basket base and pattern are available for purchase here.

Through her dedication, craftsmanship, and deep connection to her weaving community, Cheryl Thomas is a beacon of tradition. She continues to inspire new generations of artisans, carrying forward the rich traditions of basket weaving while also embracing modern techniques and innovations. Her work commands respect and admiration, both for its beauty and for its role in preserving a centuries-old craft.
