How to Choose a Basket Base Size and Wood

How to pick the base shape, size and wood for your next basket, and how to match a fitted rim.

The base decides how big your basket is at the bottom and what it looks like in the finished piece, so it is worth choosing it first.

Shape and size

Round and square slotted bases come from 2 to 9 inches. Oval bases run from 2 by 3.5 inches up to 10 by 15 inches. Start from the basket you want to make: a small trinket basket suits a 4 inch base, while a bread or serving basket needs a larger oval or square. Check your pattern, because it names the base size it was written for.

Wood

Williams Family Mill cuts bases from ambrosia maple, cherry, maple, pine, poplar and cypress. Cherry and maple are hardwoods with a fine grain. Ambrosia maple is maple with streaks of color in the grain. Pine is lighter in color and takes stain easily. Because the base is visible on the bottom of the basket, pick the wood you want to see.

Slots and rims

Round and square bases come single or double slotted. Choose the Slot Type your pattern calls for. Then match the fitted rim: use the same shape and size as the base, in ambrosia maple, cherry, maple or walnut.
